Maness Collection of African Art
Guilford College is profoundly grateful to Dr. A. Kelly Maness Jr. for generously contributing the major portion of his African and Oceanic art collection related to women’s health and fertility, along with a library of African art books and journals. A native of Greensboro, Kelly was a long-time friend and benefactor of Guilford College who died in 2001 after a courageous battle with cancer. The Maness Collection is a tremendous addition to the Gallery’s resources, one that brings a non-Western perspective to enhance the study of art, history, religion, sociology, International Studies, Women’s Studies, and many other disciplines. The objects in this collection are an enduring reminder of Kelly’s inquisitive mind, his connoisseur’s eye, and his passion for collecting, coupled with his understanding of the role of the college art museum and its broad potential to educate and unite people.
