Gods and Demons, Monkeys and Men: Masks from Southeast Asia

Gods and Demons, Monkeys and Men:

Masks of Southeast Asia

October 31 – December 11, 2005
Approximately 80 performance masks and puppets from Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, and Malaysia form this exhibition, which has been curated by Kathy Foley, a professor of theatre arts at University of California, Santa Cruz. The colorful wood and papier- mâché objects depict the people, animals, and spirits that figure in the traditional dance dramas performed for religious ceremonies and as entertainment. Foley interviewed, viewed and studied performance traditions with major artists in Southeast Asia, and she will present at the opening reception on October 31, 4:30-6:30 p.m.
