Dover Monthly Meeting (Upper Reedy Fork)

Location: Directions from west Greensboro (1981): Take Market St./421 towards Colfax (or Friendly Ave. west to Market/421 west). Turn right on Bunker Hill Road and proceed 2 miles. Just beyond Marshall Smith Road on the right is the house of Vera Gordon. Take path which goes by the barn on the left side of the house. The path goes between a field and woods. Cemetery is in woods on left. Stone markers are at the entrance.

Timeline: Upper Reedy Fork PM 1786 under New Garden MM; renamed Dover in 1793. MM 1815 (Hinshaw, Weeks). 1806: Deed of 5 acres, 116 poles to Quakers, 4-23-1806, Guilford Co., Book I, p. 42 (PA). Laid down 1899 with members transferred to New Garden MM (CC). 1900: Representative Meeting 8-9-1900, p. 175: Dover laid down, property except graveyard to be sold. Title to graveyard to be transferred to New Garden Hall (PA).

Dunn's Creek Particular Meeting (Thames Cemetery)

Location: (1958) Cumberland County, “about eight miles south by southeast of Fayetteville, in the Big Bend of the Cape Fear River below Rock Fish Creek … Dunn’s Creek long ago became known as Stoney Creek.” (VF)

Dutchman's Creek Particular Meeting

Location: Davie County, NC. Four miles east of Mocksville on Old Lexington Road (undated notes in Augusta VF).

Timeline: (See Other Resources below.) 1896: One acre to Trustees of NCYM, dated 6-20-1896, Davie Co. Book 14, p. 477.  Evangelistic Com. reported ground purchased in Davie County and a meeting house to be built. 4-11-1916: Lot for Dutchman’s Creek purchased for $5, house built for $600, $150 needed for repairs (PA, CC). An acre of land to NCYM trustees, dated 6-20-1896, Davie Co. Deed of one acre on Mocksville Road adjoining Thom. James’ land, to NCYM trustees, dated 4-4-1910, Davie Co., Book 21, p. 79. Blank deed ca 1921 of one acre on old Mocksville Road, references Davie Co. Book 21, p. 79 (D, CC).
8-5-1925: Board turned down an offer to buy property at Dutchman’s Creek but agreed to sell the house. 4-13-1926: house still not sold. 7-3-1951: Meeting/Board approved retaining property at Dutchman’s Creek, about one acre, and selling some trees. Sept. 1951, work done and cemetery improved. (PA)
1951 YM minutes: “An offer was received to sell the site, which contains about one acre. However, since there is a cemetery on the property the Permanent Board and the Trustees decided not to sell the land. Certain people in that community whose families were members of the meeting have shown some interest in keeping the cemetery in better shape.” Timber sold for $150, to be used to help keep up the cemetery. 1957 YM minutes: More timber sold. Other resources at Quaker Archives: Augusta Academy, a two-story boarding school and Quaker meeting a few miles away, held combined monthly meetings with Dutchman's Creek. The book of minutes covers 1898-1908, including names and membership transfers. Both particular meetings were under East Bend MM in Yadkin County. None of these are indexed in Hinshaw, but the minutes are online under Yadkin County, Augusta, in Ancestry.com (VF, original minutes at FHC). Augusta closed and the property was sold in 1909 (PA). Pastors included Joe Binkley, Miss Margaret Hackney and Albert Peeler (VF).

Last known ownership and care: NCYM (D). Undated notes in Davie County Library mentioned that Mr. T. A. Vanzant was keeping up the old church grounds (Augusta VF). Local volunteers organized a clean-up in 2003 (CC).
