Melissa, LC Director

About: Melissa began her teaching career in the North Carolina Public Schools as a Teaching Fellow. After five years as a middle school and high school language arts teacher, she moved into teaching composition and working in the UNC-Charlotte Writing Center where she fell in love with one-with-one instruction. She went on to direct tutorial centers at Jacksonville University and NC State University. Since 2005, she has happily directed Guilford’s program, and since 2008, she has relished in her role as Tristan’s mom.

About: Selena has taught English and Writing at Guilford, GTCC, SNHU, UNCG, and Virginia College. She graduated with her Master's degree from UNCG and still loves to learn all she can about ways to be a better writer and teacher.  She currently lives in Greensboro with her husband and 4 children. She also loves Doctor Who, coffee, baby giggles, and using the Oxford comma correctly.

Professional Tutors

Adrian, Tutor (Accounting) Adrian began tutoring Accounting at Guilford in 2009 while he was a student. In May 2011, he became the first member of his family to graduate college when he finished his B. S. in Accounting with High Honors at Guilford. He earned his Master’s of Science in Accountancy with Distinction from Wake Forest University in December 2012. He currently works as a CPA with Bernard Robinson & Co., LLP in Greensboro.

Allison, Tutor (Academic Coaching, Reading) Allison has over 14 years of teaching and tutoring experience in various settings. She has an undergraduate degree in Special Education and a Master's in Reading Education, both from UNC-Greensboro. This is her 2nd year working at Guilford as an Academic Coach and reading tutor. Allison is originally from Greensboro and enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband and 3 year old son.


Andrea, Tutor (Writing, Reading, Creative Writing, English Language Learning, Statements of Intent) Hailing from West Virginia, Andrea graduated from Guilford in ‘08 with a B. A. in Religious Studies and Sociology. At Guilford, she also worked as a teaching assistant and received both the Dana Scholarship and the Sue Keith Prize for Fiction (twice!). Following a year as a volunteer with AmeriCorps and attendance at the New York Summer Writers’ Workshop at Skidmore, she got her MFA in fiction at American University. Andrea has work published in Ghost TownBlack Gum Review, and Lake Effect.


Andrew, Tutor/Instructor (Math/Quantitative, Physics) Andrew holds a Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering from Georgia Tech and an MFA in Creative Writing from UNC-Greensboro. He has taught at Guilford College since 2009. He is the editor of Unicorn Press, a publisher of new poetry in hand bound editions based in Greensboro.


Chris, Tutor (Math/Quantitative) Chris is a professional tutor for mathematics including Calculus, Statistics, Quantitative Literacy and all those fun maths in between. He has worked with a variety of students in a variety of math subjects and has his degree in Engineering. A CRLA certified tutor, Chris is here to help however he can.

Deirdre, tutor


Deirdre, Tutor/Academic Coach (Writing, Reading, Academic Coaching, Study Skills, Testing, Time Management, presentations, unpacking assignments, outlines, ADHD/LD learning issues) Deirdre holds a M. A. and B. A. in U. S. History from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She taught Western Civilization, U. S. History, and Women’s Studies at UNCG and GTCC from 1992-1998. She then taught History and English at Guilford Day School (now Noble Academy) from 1998-2007, before moving to The Greensboro Montessori School to teach English and History in the Middle School. She joined the Learning Commons at Guilford as a writing tutor in the spring of 2010 and also serves as an academic coach.


Emily, Tutor (Psychology) Emily is a graduate of Guilford College (2007), with a Master's degree in Clinical Psychology, and is finishing up a Master's in Public Health. She enjoys longs walks on the beach, petting puppies that don't belong to her, eating nachos, and watching The Office for the 100th time. She tutors any and all Psychology courses, specializing in PSY 301 and PSY 445.

Herb, Tutor

Herb, Tutor (Quantitative Assistance) Herb has a doctorate in Population Dynamics from the Johns Hopkins University, Bloomberg School of Public Health. He has practiced in the fields of statistics, survey research, and program evaluation for over 35 years. His undergraduate training is in mathematics and mathematics education. Recent clients have included the U. S. Department of Education, Agency for Healthcare and Quality, Maryland State Department of Education, and George Washington University. He now teaches Quantitative Literacy at Guilford and is a CRLA Certified Tutor.


Linda, Tutor (Writing, Reading, Copywriting, Graphic Design, Photography, Presentations, Theatre Studies, WordPress, Writing for the Online & Business Environments) Linda is a 2014 graduate of Guilford College and brings over twenty years experience in design and writing. Currently she’s a copywriter and editor for The Daly Group, a showroom photographer for Matsuoka, International, and a freelance graphic designer and photographer. In addition, she has worked in communications and marketing for Guilford College, has provided web content and editing for a number of websites, and has worked in both photography and design for Reed Business Information publications and House and Garden Magazine. Linda is a CRLA certified tutor.

Sharon, tutor

Sharon, Tutor (Biology, GST/General Studies, Math, Physics) Sharon is a 2012 graduate of Guilford College. She has been tutoring at Guilford since fall 2011. She likes to read, run, spend time with her kids, and spend time in nature. In addition, she teaches choir to children at her church. Sharon is a CRLA Certified Tutor.


Uma, Tutor/Instructor (Chemistry) Uma is a part-time lecturer in Chemistry at Guilford.

About: Doug was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. His first book is Judgments. A contributing editor at Lake Effect, his work can be read in The Gettysburg Review, Quarterly West, Cimarron Review, Hayden's Ferry Review, Washington Square, The American Journal of Poetry, and many other magazines. Two of his poems appear in The Southern Poetry Anthology, Volume VII: North Carolina.
