Resources and suggestions for finding information on site selected for study in the Nature Writing course with a focus on the Guilford college campus and North Carolina resources.

Land Management Mapping

Many government programs support applications and mapping projects to support health, safety, and stewardship of resources. These not only include public land but also tools useful for surveying private property. Type of mapping readily available may vary from state to state. For example, California has more details mapping available for fire and earthquake risks. In addition to government sites, sometimes major state universities have research studies with open access resources dealing with GIS mapping for land management and safety.

The Flood Risk Information System is freely accessible only and allows you to see how specific properties might be impacted by devastated flooding. You can use these to visual how your landscape might look until differing climate scenarios.

Recreational Resources

Government managed lands open to recreation often have trail maps and additional resources that document that landscape and natural resources of an area. These resources are often hosted through whichever agency is responsible for the property. For example, city parks are through a city parks and recreation department web site and state parks through the state's parks division. Public lands may also be managed through other agencies that provide detailed information as a matter of public record.
