First Year Impressions

Writings, later reflections, and images from individuals in Guilford's past experiencing Guilford for the first time as first year students and/or faculty.

Judy Harvey Interview

Daughter of a Quaker minister, Judy came to Guilford College from Richmond, Indiana. She fell in love with Guilford when she and her family attended the Friends World Conference held at the college in 1967, and was determined to return as a student.

Judy Harvey continued

“I was going to Guilford. I had to go to Guilford. I just felt like Guilford is where I had to be. So I got accepted. My parents gave in even though they were not happy about it. And then in the spring of ’69, I think, the riots happened between—at A&T over an election of Dudley High School officers. I—I don’t remember what all that was about, but there was a big fight that hit the news. And they were calling it a riot. And my parents were afraid for me to come to Greensboro the following fall. But you know by the time the fall came around, it had all died down, and they—they did let me come.” p.5

“Guilford got me ready to think about issues of race because over the summer, before I had ever started, the summer reading that they sent me—they sent me Man in the 20th Century[?], I think it was called, by Kenneth Boulding. And they sent Manchild in the Promised Land.” p. 5

“The freshman class my first year was called “Man in the 20th Century,” and we had a significant unit on race and racism and the Black Power movement.” p.6
