Resources for Online & Hybrid Course Design

Guiding Questions

Guiding Questions for Developing Online & Hybrid Courses:

  • Why make students come to class?
  • Can we decrease the size of class meetings?
  • Is lecturing to each section efficient?
  • Can we improve the student experience?
  • How can we make students prepare?

Instead of asking, "How can I transfer my class online?" ask: "What can I do online that I couldn't do in class?"

Quality Matters Standards

Quality Matters is a nationally recognized standard for improving the quality of online courses. We have a subscription to Quality Matters  and recommend their training workshops as professional development opportunities. Guilford’s subscription offers access to QM’s Course Review Management System, which allows faculty to conduct a self-guided review of their courses based on the QM rubric.  The Self Review works faculty through a series of rubric standards designed to help determine the extent to which their courses meet those standards, supporting improved course design.  There also are workshops for designing online classes, improving them, and making them more interactive. You can take just one, or several. If you are interested, you may access the Quality Matter web site to explore its offerings and to establish your account.  If you have any questions, or require support, please contact Wade Maki.
